Track 11. 8th International Workshop on Software Engineering for E-learning (ISELEAR’17)

This track hosts the 8th International Workshop on Software Engineering for E-Learning (ISELEAR’17). This workshop is focused on all the Software Engineering aspects of the e-Learning application domain.eLearning systems are technological ecosystems that integrate very heterogeneous components such as Learning Managements Systems (LMS), digital repositories, educational external tools, social tools, etc. Designing these kinds of ecosystems involves different profiles such as teachers, developers or educationalists, and should also take into account the heterogeneity of final users as teachers, students or tutors. This requires studying the different kinds of necessities and interaction that each stakeholder has. For this reason, the design and development of an eLearning system is very complex. In this sense, the complexity and specificity of e-Learning projects require the adaptation of the methodologies of software design and development (agile methodologies, model-driven techniques, domain engineering approaches, web application frameworks, methods and metrics for effort estimation, etc.). Therefore, in order to address these eLearning ecosystem requirements new domain-specific methods, techniques and tools are needed.

Given this context, institutions, companies and educational tool developers have made an important effort to define ad-hoc tools and methodologies specifically conceived for e-learning (production of learning contents by multidisciplinary groups, application of e-learning recommendation and standards, formative assessment approaches, etc.), and standards for different aspects of e-Learning systems. For these reasons, it is possible to consider a new emerging discipline, that of e-Learning Software Engineering, which addresses all the aspects of the systematic conception, design, development and maintenance of e-Learning solutions.

However, Software Engineering topics are treated in a light way in typical eLearning scientific conferences, which generally  are focused on pedagogical and user-centered aspects of advanced technologies and educational systems, while aspects like modeling, design, project planning, life-cycle, etc. are barely addressed or treated as collateral matters. The ISELEAR Workshop series are oriented to bridge this gap.
